The Sandy Bay entrance sign is lit up with fibre optic cables only and has no actual lamps inside the letters! The light source is a 150w force cooled metal halide lamp unit in a light projector box on the side of the stone pier to the left-hand side.
The great advantage of this installation is that there is no need to worry about height access when the time comes to change the lamp! There’s no need to close off part of the road for a tower or an access platform. That one lamp lights all the letters at the same time can be changed easily at its low down location in the stone pier. It’s also proving very reliable. This unit has been running now for nearly two years!
